As I prefer a Japanese breakfast to Western style the choices were high quality and well varied and abundant. Both days were excellent.

Matsue is a 400-year old city so there is a lot of history. Learn about it at the great Matsue History museum which is close to the castle, Lafcadio Hearn museum, and nice shops. The many rivers within the city and very large lakes like Shinji come right up to the city. You can beautiful views of the lakes on trips to Izumo shrine, and Yuushien and Adachi museums. Our 5 full days were not enough. People were very welcoming.

Matsue is a beautiful smaller town with an amazing castle and grounds, samurai houses and lovely streets to wander around. We did an afternoon train trip to a stunning temple in Izumo and also to a nearby onsen town.
Matsue is a gem as it has so many wonderful sites to visit without the crowds of Kyoto.
We will definitely be going back.

Our stay was brief - only two full days - but in addition to its castle and historic district made for walking, Matsue is a good jumping off point for day trips to Izumo Taisha shrine, the Adachi Art Museum and the garden at Yushien.
One evening we had an enjoyable meal at a local "okonomiyaki" restaurant on the quiet street behind the hotel. The 88-year old proprietress was energetic, fun to speak with, and recommended a very tasty locally-brewed sake.

Matsue Castle and the surrounding castle complex are incredible. It’s a far more authentic experience of feudal era Japanese castles than the remodeled, refurbished, and in many ways entirely rebuilt castles of Osaka, Nagoya, and Hiroshima, to name a few.

It's a wonderful and charming city! The art museums, castle/historical sites, and natural scenery are great. We had a lovely time just walking around the side streets and along the river. A hidden gem of Japan for sure!

Our host was so wonderful. So helpful and kind and has very good English which was great for help in understanding the area including the local onsen and temples. Our host was very easy to contact and was a great help with organising transport, shopping. The house is in a quiet area with beautiful well kept gardens and the natural landscape has such beauty. Lovely spacious home with long views to Matsue and the mountains.
Irish writer Lafcadio Hearn (Japanese name Yakumo Koizumi)used to staying here for several years. The hotel staffs are all kind and nice. The breakfast seems healthy and tastes good. The box for breakfast is printed some local words and you can learn some local languages from it. Our seats capture the beauty of Lake Shinji. It’s a very pleasant stay.
The room was luxuriously big (at least for Japanese hotels), the staff members were very polite and helpful and tried to solve any issues to the best of their abilities. There was a tasty Japanese style breakfast available including the local clam soup and well prepared fish and exquisite little deserts.
Such a great place to stay in Matsue. It’s an old house with a quirky, young vibe, so you have the best of traditional and modern.
Simple and minimalistic but cosy, clean and charming. Host Kohei is very helpful and available.
Little cafe downstairs is super cute.
It was amazing with tatami mats in the hotel and not only in rooms. It felt good walking on them in the lobby and everywhere else.
We liked very much onsen as well. I was there every evening during our stay.
