Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow combines Victorian architecture and a vibrant arts scene. A former European City of Culture, it is home to many national organisations including the Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland. The museums are also world class. Not to be missed are the futuristic-looking Glasgow Science Centre and the eclectic exhibits at the Kelvingrove.
Lined with Georgian buildings, George Square is the city’s focal point and the spot for Glasgow Hogmanay celebrations. Fanning out from here are streets housing venues for the city’s main love: music. From classical concerts to up-and-coming bands, every taste is catered for.
As host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow is also a city of sport. Scotland’s 2 most iconic football clubs - Celtic and Rangers - are based here, as is the national football stadium Hampden Park. The Scottish Football Museum is also an excellent walk through the beautiful game.

Glasgow is a city of extraordinary contrasts and great...
Glasgow is a city of extraordinary contrasts and great history. It has had its fair share of challenges - not least of which has been the dismantling of its major industries in the 70s and 80s and the carving up of the centre with a huge elevated dual carriageway, but this is a city which is full of life today; it seems determined to celebrate all aspects of of its architecture, its parks, people and its culture and that celebration is infectious. The people are very friendly and there is a huge range of excellent places to drink and dine in all parts of the city. Kelvingrove is a very vibrant and impressive art gallery while Pollock Park and the Burrell collection is a highlight: both a magnificent space and a superb museum. The collection is curated to give young and old the best possible insights into its objects and art. We had a fascinating day out there. The park and grounds are an idyllic place to walk and the Highland cattle are very handsome. Celentanos in Cathedral Square for a birthday dinner on Wednesday night was an unexpectedly high class restaurant which offered the most amazing tasting menu and superb wines, also very friendly staff.
No stay would be complete without a trip on the clockwork orange, Glasgow's very own underground railway; trains and tunnels are about a third of the size of London underground rolling stock, but they are very clean and comfortable although the benches on the platforms are impossible to sit on.
Those looking for an alternative to Edinburgh will not be disappointed in this very genuinely warm and welcoming city.

I have family in Glasgow so this is not my first visit.
I have family in Glasgow so this is not my first visit. Glasgow is a wonderful city to visit if you like architecture, walking, live music, cafes and vintage markets. If you have time, go to the South Side, where there are many parks and the Burrell Collection. People are very friendly and considerate of each other in Glasgow.
